Air Travel And Ear Pressure

Ear pressure and pain are common complaints for air travelers. Under normal circumstances, our bodies have time to equalize the air pressure in our inner ear with the pressure outside, but the rapid ascent and descent of air travel does not allow for that . When the pressure is uneven, it can cause the eardrum to stretch uncomfortably. Frequent swallowing helps keep the tubes in our ears open and more capable of accommodating air pressure changes. Chewing gum or sucking candy can help stimulate swallowing, but if that does not work, try inhaling and then,  with your mouth closed, pinch your nose shut and try to force air out until your ears pop.
