Scientists at the Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto, Canada, have developed a blood test that can determine hearing disorders. Although it is still in developmental stages and have not  yet begun clinical trials, the project looks promising. The research began because the physical examinations currently used to detect hearing loss are not able to identify the exact location of the inner ear damage. Research determined that, when damaged, the cochlear hairs that transmit sound release specific proteins. Using these proteins as biomarkers, the blood test would allow for more exact diagnoses, making the treatments more personalized for each individual patient. The levels of these proteins can also help determine the extent of damage and hearing loss.
