A Protein That Could Help Find A Cure For Hearing Loss

     Researchers have made a discovery that may lead to a cure for hearing loss. A protein called GFI1, which is involved in the creation of ear hair cells, may be the key. These inner ear hairs are responsible for amplifying sound, transforming sound waves into electronic signals, and helping those signals travel to the brain, which then interprets them. The study shows that the GFI1 protein is critically involved in embryonic hair cells maturing into functioning adult hair cells, which has led to the protein being used in experimental protocols to regenerate these delicate hairs. Currently, hair cells cannot be regenerated if they are damaged or replaced in those born without them.
