What are those instruments hearing professionals use during ear exams? An otoscope (also known as an auriscope) is used for examining the outer and middle portions of the ear, and inside the ears for signs of ear wax buildup, infection, or other issues. In infants and children, an otoscope identifies issues a child cannot verbalize that he or she is experiencing. In adults, an otoscope confirms symptoms and determines the course of treatment. A curette, a long, thin instrument with a small scoop on the tip that fits inside the ear canal, is used to gently scoop compacted wax out of the ear. Professionals also use ear irrigators with a softening solution to help clear and remove wax build up.
