Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, and about 20% of American adults indicate that they have some degree of hearing loss. While it is not known exactly how these two large populations may be related, research shows that hearing loss is twice as prevalent among diabetics as it is in those without the disease. Moreover, the rate of hearing loss is 30% higher among the 79 million American adults with prediabetes (blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes) than it is in those with normal glucose levels. With these statistics in mind, anyone diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes may want to have his or her hearing evaluated.
