Is Osteoporosis Affecting Your Hearing
May 18, 2020
Osteoporosis is a disease that can affect anyone but is most common in Asian and Caucasian women. It causes deterioration of the bones, making them porous and fragile and thus more susceptible to fracture than healthy bones. This includes the bones in our ears. One study has shown that people with osteoporosis are more than twice as likely to develop sudden-onset hearing loss. Links have also been found between osteoporosis and gradual hearing loss due to the demineralization of the bones in the middle ear. Further studies are needed to determine whether treatments meant to improve bone quality will also reduce the risk of gradual hearing loss, but researchers believe it is a possibility.
If you’re 50 and older, you should get a regular hearing screening if you have hearing challenges just as you would get a bone density test if you have a broken bone. Hearing aids are linked to improvements in the social, emotional, psychological and physical well-being of people with mild to severe hearing loss.
P.S. The three tiny bones in the middle ear are the hammer (malleus), the anvil (incus), and the stirrup (stapes).
