A New, Better Way to Deliver Inner Ear Medication

 Draper engineers and scientists at Massachusetts Eye and Ear have developed a new battery-operated implant that can deliver drugs directly to the cochlea. This is far more effective than previous methods of delivering medication, because the cochlea is so difficult to reach. Post-surgery, this method is also far less invasive than other methods, which often involve multiple injections behind the eardrum. These injections also use high doses of medication since there is no way to be sure how much is actually reaching the cochlea. Because this new device can be programmed to deliver drugs as needed directly to the cochlea, many side-effects of the medications can be avoided, because the dosages will be much lower than before.
