The preliminary results of a study at Ryerson University in Toronto have shown that people who sing, specifically those who are trained singers, have a superior ability to distinguish speech in settings with loud ambient noise. One theory is that voice training develops fine-grained pitch perception, which helps them separate speech from background noise. Joining a choir or singing group has cognitive and social advantages that may also contribute to improved hearing, but group activities are not required. All this means is that there may be some real benefits from singing in the shower.
