Soft and Loud

Age-related hearing loss (“presbycusis”) makes it difficult for older individuals to hear “soft” sounds such as consonants (p, s, f, etc.) while still being able to hear louder sounds normally. Modern hearing instruments employ a technology called “multi-channel compression,” which enables hearing instruments to squeeze (or compress) the full range of sounds into a smaller range than the user can  hear.  In addition, the device takes into account that the user will hear some frequencies better than others  and will often want to hear certain frequencies (such as speech) more than others.  The hearing instrument can also adjust to incoming volumes, so soft sounds are amplified more than moderate sounds and loud sounds may not be amplified at all.
