The Controversy of Cochlear Implants in Infants

 The Deaf community has its own language and its own culture. Recently, many organizations have worked to remove the word “disability” from conversations about deafness, and many members of the community have chosen not to use cochlear implants (CIs) to improve their hearing because they do not see their condition as being debilitating. This has sparked a debate about the benefits of CIs in infants, with some believing it is healthier to allow children to grow up and make their own decision about surgical implants. Others argue that allowing for implants as early as possible will aid in speech development. While the debate continues, the decision is, of course, left to the parents and their child’s doctors.

 Hearing aids make sounds louder. However, for children and adults who have severe to profound hearing loss, making sounds louder may not be enough to allow the ear to process sound.? Cochlear implants can provide sound for people who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids.  It is recommended that a child be appropriately fit with hearing aids and use them for 3-6 months before determining implant candidacy.

P.S. About 90 percent of deaf infants are born to parents with no hearing loss and little to no experience with the deaf community.
