Tympanometry Ear Exam

    When you visit a hearing doctor for an exam, you may receive a tympanometry. This is a hearing test that evaluates the functions of the middle ear. Many adults undergo this test as part of a routine hearing exam. Positioned behind the eardrum, the middle ear is also known as the tympanic membrane. Tympanometry helps doctors search for any problems affecting the middle ear. Some of the conditions commonly screened for are ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, a perforated tympanic membrane, and problems with the eustachian tube (which connects the upper throat and nose to the middle ear). The test is recorded on a tympanogram, which shows the eardrum’s response to changes in pressure.

P.S. Tympanometry can be performed every few weeks to monitor the presence of fluid in the middle ear. Hearing loss due to fluid in the middle ear cannot be corrected with hearing aids.
