Diplacusis

Diplacusis, often called “double hearing,” is a condition that usually causes someone to hear one sound at different pitches in one or both ears. Other types of diplacusis can cause a person to hear the same tone as two different sounds, or to hear it repeated like an echo. Diplacusis is usually, though not exclusively, experienced as a secondary symptom of sensorineural hearing loss. The condition typically occurs after an ear infection, head trauma, or exposure to extremely loud noise and may be accompanied by tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Diplacusis can be caused by obstructions in the ear, such as earwax plugs, abnormal growths, and sinus infections. Although it can be permanent, diplacusis is most often a temporary condition.
