Otosclerosis and Hearing

“Oto” means “of the ear,” and “sclerosis” is the abnormal hardening of body tissue. Otosclerosis occurs when there is abnormal bone growth in the ear. Normal bone remodeling occurs as bones renew themselves by replacing old tissue with new. But with otosclerosis, abnormal bone remodeling obstructs sounds from traveling from the middle ear to the inner ear. Hearing obstruction most often occurs when a bone in the middle ear called “the stapes” becomes stuck in place due to bone overgrowth. The bone becomes unable to vibrate and sound cannot travel through the ear. The cause is unknown, but otosclerosis is thought to be hereditary and may be tied to immune disorders or an inner ear stress fracture.
