Dos and Don'ts When Caring for Wet Hearing Aids

While hearing devices are susceptible to damage from moisture, all is not lost if they do get wet. Hearing aid users who step into the shower or get caught in the rain while wearing their devices should follow these dos and don'ts to avoid needing a replacement.

Do Take the Battery Out A hand holding a hearing aid in Columbus, OH

When hearing devices get wet, remove them right away. Turn off the aids and discard the battery. A wet battery will no longer work and can become corroded, which will cause more damage to the aids themselves if contact is made.

Don't Use Heat

Hearing devices aren't meant to be heated. Putting them in the microwave, using a hairdryer, or placing them on a vent in an attempt to dry out moisture will melt internal components, causing further damage.

Do Remove Excess Water

Gently dab the affected hearing aid with a soft, dry cloth. If the water was soapy or dirty, rinse the aids with clean water, then dry.

Don't Use Again Right Away

Leave the hearing devices in a safe, dry place with the battery drawer open for 24 to 48 hours before inserting a new battery and turning them on. You can also put them in a closed container of uncooked rice, which absorbs moisture. A hearing aid desiccant can also be effective.

Do Use a Hearing Aid Dryer

Most manufacturers recommend regular use of a hearing aid dryer to remove sweat, humidity, and other forms of moisture. When hearing aids get wet, try leaving them in the hearing aid dryer overnight.

Keep in mind that most hearing aids are designed to withstand up to 30 minutes submerged in three feet of water. If aids do get wet, the most important step is to get them to a dry place quickly before any moisture penetrates internal components.
