Ear Wax is Actually Important to Hearing Health

  Earwax, far from having no purpose, prevents dust and dirt from damaging the eardrum and keeps bacteria and fungi from forming in the ear canal. However, too much earwax can cause problems such as hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and ear pain. The most common cause of earwax build-up and blockages is, ironically, the misuse of cotton swabs. When used to “clean” the ear canal, cotton swabs do not remove earwax. Rather, they push it deeper. A normal, healthy ear is self-cleaning, though people using hearing aids or ear plugs on a regular basis may want to keep an eye on build up and speak with their doctor if any ill effects occur.

Use cotton swabs only on the outside of the ear. If you have a severe enough problem with ear wax that you need to have it removed by a health professional more than once a year, discuss with them which method of prevention may work best for you. Your health care provider can look into your ears with a special instrument, called an otoscope, to see if ear wax buildup is present.
