One-Sided Hearing

Hearing loss does not always occur with equal loss in both ears. In fact, it can happen that there is no loss at all in one ear while the other experiences severe or total hearing loss. When this happens, patients may want to explore a “Contralateral Routing of Signal” (or CROS) hearing aid system, which can take in sound on the hearing impaired side and send it to the side with adequate hearing ability. This process replicates the experience of standard hearing, making speech easier to understand and sound location easier to accomplish. CROS systems come in both in-the-ear and behind-the-ear styles to give patients the opportunity of finding the one that is most comfortable and effective for their situation.
