Waardenburg syndrome is a genetic condition that has a variety of possible symptoms, including changes in eye (people with Waardenburg syndrome tend to have very light blue eyes or differently colored eyes), skin, and hair pigmentation and hearing loss. This is because the genes that cause the condition are directly involved in the formation and development of melanocytes, which create the melanin that plays an important role in proper middle ear function. Babies born with Waardenburg syndrome are sometimes born deaf or hard of hearing. When the condition is not severe, it is easy to miss the diagnosis unless other family members also have the condition.
