Acoustic Neuroma

 Acoustic neuroma (also called vestibular schwannoma) is a slow-growing, noncancerous tumor on the vestibular nerve, which is the main nerve that leads from the inner ear to the brain. The tumor grows out of certain cells (Schwann cells)  on the nerve, and in most cases, it grows slowly or does not grow at all. In rare cases, the tumor can grow rapidly and put enough pressure on the brain to interfere with vital functions. The branches of the vestibular nerve are responsible for balance and hearing, so symptoms of an acoustic neuroma are often unsteadiness, dizziness/vertigo, ringing in the affected ear (tinnitus), and hearing loss in one ear. Treatment options include monitoring the tumor’s growth, radiation, and surgical removal.
