Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease

     Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the inner ear and forms a response that includes immune complexes and antibodies. A second related cause of AIED happens when the endolymphatic sac, located in the inner ear, becomes dilated as an immune response to the inner ear. AIED can lead to hearing loss in both ears due to damage to the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Symptoms of AIED include dizziness, balance issues, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss. Additionally, a patient may experience progressive hearing loss, fluctuating hearing levels, aural fullness (feels like the ears can’t pop), and symptoms of other autoimmune diseases such as fatigue, fever, and muscle aches.
