 Did you know that listening to headphones or earbuds at a level of 100 decibels for only 15 minutes can cause permanent hearing loss? According to research, 70 decibels is a safe noise level, while workplace regulations permit noises up to 85 decibels. How can you tell when your music device is too loud? A good rule is to keep music volumes at 60% or less of the maximum volume the device allows. Note that the 70 to 85 decibel range is a safe level for adults, but children’s developing ears need even more protection and lower maximum volumes. If you can hear your child’s music when he or she is wearing headphones or earbuds, the volume is too loud.
