Iron Deficiency and Hearing Loss

  Anemia, specifically iron deficiency, may have links to hearing loss. One study at the University of Pennsylvania has shown that patients with anemia are twice as likely to experience hearing loss as those without.  This may be because iron helps our blood cells carry oxygen throughout our bodies, and our ears require a constant flow of oxygen-rich blood to maintain healthy function. Iron deficiency anemia is most common in menstruating women due to blood loss or in pregnant women due to hormone changes; however, it can occur in anyone at any age because of blood loss, gastrointestinal issues, and hereditary conditions like sickle cell anemia. A balanced diet usually solves the problem, but supplements can be used, as well.

 An iron deficiency anemia can be treated easily with supplements, so future studies should focus on whether this can help prevent hearing loss. Diagnosing a hearing impairment is best left to skilled, specially trained hearing aid specialist. If you don’t hear as well as you feel you should, don’t wait until you feel left out. 

P.S. Supplements for anemia are not recommended for adults with hearing loss caused by sickle cell anemia because they can be harmful.
