Single-Ear Hearing Loss

Hearing loss in both ears is called binaural hearing loss. It is more common than hearing loss in one ear, known as unilateral hearing loss, which can result in single-sided deafness. This can occur in people of any age and may happen gradually or suddenly. If the hearing loss is sudden (called sudden sensorineural hearing loss), it is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. Unilateral hearing loss can cause a person to have a difficult time locating the origin of sounds, which can be especially disorienting when the person is in a crowded room or noisy location. Unilateral hearing loss also causes sounds to be heard at a lower volume and high-pitched noises to sound muffled. 

Hearing loss varies by type, cause, and degree. It can affect one ear or both, and its effects can be due to disease, heredity,  a noisy environment, or  the aging process.
