The Four Types of Hearing Loss

 Hearing loss has many causes and is classified into four types. “Sensorineural” hearing loss takes place in the inner ear and is most often caused by aging or noise exposure. It is the most common type of hearing loss. “Conductive” hearing loss occurs in the middle ear as the result of sounds that are not properly transmitted through the ear canal to the eardrum, making noises sound quieter than they normally would. “Mixed” hearing loss happens when there is a combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Finally, “auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder” (ANSD) arises when the ear is functioning properly,  but the signals sent to the brain are disrupted. This is the least common type of hearing loss.
