 Glue ear is a condition that causes fluid buildup in the middle ear in the space behind the eardrum. It is common in children but affects adults as well, often after an ear infection. It results from a blockage in the Eustachian tubes, which causes the cells in the middle ear to produce a thick, sticky, glue-like substance. Although the condition is considered temporary, it can affect hearing and may require surgery to correct. Loss of hearing is the main symptom of glue ear, and patients may experience muffled sounds or feel like they are wearing earplugs. Pain, pressure, and ringing in the ears can also occur. The condition often clears up on its own in several weeks.
