It’s also untrue that hearing does not affect whole body health; untreated hearing loss increases the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, social isolation, depression, and falls that lead to injury. Contrary to popular belief, hearing loss is not inevitable or unpreventable. Hearing loss has a complex mix of causes that include everything from genetics to medications, other health conditions, and exposure to loud noises. 

 Although hearing loss often goes undetected, it is one of the most common health problems in North America,  with only high blood pressure and arthritis being more widespread.
