How Pendred Syndrome Affects Hearing

   Pendred syndrome is a genetic condition that affects the hearing of babies and young children. A child with Pendred syndrome begins to lose their hearing between birth and age three. The hearing loss may happen suddenly and become progressively worse. Although some children regain part of their hearing later in life, others will become deaf. Hearing loss usually occurs in both ears, although one ear may have better hearing than the other. Pendred syndrome also affects the thyroid and can cause balance issues. Although there is no cure for the disease, some patients are eligible for cochlear implants, which do not restore normal hearing but bypass the injured areas of the ear, creating a sense of hearing in the brain.
