   One in three adults over the age of 65 have some degree of hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss (called presbycusis) is the gradual loss of hearing in both ears. It most commonly affects a person’s ability to hear high-pitched sounds. Other age-related hearing problems include speech that sounds slurred or mumbled, difficulty understanding conversations, inability to filter speech from background noise, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and certain noises sounding too loud. Age-related hearing loss is most often caused by changes in the inner ear, middle ear, and along nerve pathways from the ear to the brain. Repeated or continuous exposure to loud noises can also significantly affect hearing as we age.
