     Hearing involves a series of steps that convert sound waves into electrical signals to be read by the brain. Sound moves from the outer ear, to the middle ear and eardrum, to tiny bones that vibrate, to tiny hair cells inside the cochlea where electrical signals are created. From there the auditory nerve carries the signals to the brain for interpretation. When hearing loss happens, there’s a problem with one of these steps. Different hearing tests are designed to isolate the place where hearing loss is happening, the severity, and the  type. Audiometry tests measure your hearing threshold at various frequencies to identify the degree and type of hearing loss.  They are recommended for identifying permanent hearing loss. 

The first step toward better hearing is recognizing that a hearing problem exists. Having a hearing test is the second step. When the first signs appear— repeatedly adjusting volume controls, frequently misunderstanding what is being said, and asking people to repeat themselves.
