A Guide to the Different Sizes and Types of Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aids are available in numerous brands, types, and designs to suit various degrees of hearing loss. These devices require specific accessories like batteries, cleaning tools, and cases for optimum and efficient functionality. Using the right size and type of battery improves a hearing aid’s lifespan and efficiency. Below is a guide to the different sizes and types of hearing aid batteries.

Types of Hearing Aid Batteries

There are two main types of hearing aid batteries: rechargeable and disposable. Rechargeable batteries are mainly usable on newer models of Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, and they offer cosmetic advantages and improved power compared to disposable batteries. They are sleek in comparison to disposable batteries and can last over a year before needing replacing.

Disposable/button batteries get activated once the factory sealed sticker comes into contact with air. However, reattaching the sticker cannot power off the battery, so it remains active until the hearing aid drains the available power. While the battery life of an activated disposable battery ranges from 3-20 days, they can remain stable for three years if stored in dry conditions at room temperature.

Sizes of Hearing Aid Batteries

Disposable zinc air batteries are available in 4 standard color-coded sizes, which are sizes 10, 13, 312, and 675. Size 10 batteries have a dimension of 5.8mm x 3.6mm with a yellow coat for ease of identification. Completely-in-canal (CIC) and Mini Receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) hearing aids use this size battery, which lasts for approximately 3-10 days. Size 13 batteries are orange, 7.9 mm x 5.4mm in size, and are commonly used in BTE and In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids. This battery size has an energy life span of 6-14 days.

Size 312 batteries are 7.9mm x 3.6mm in size and are coded in brown color. They last for 3-10 days and are usable on RITE, ITC, and mini-BTE hearing aids. Size 675 batteries have the most prolonged power retention of 9-20 days, use a blue color code, and have a dimension of 11.6mm x 5. 4mm. This battery size is only usable in BTE hearing aids.
