The reasoning is that estrogen has been known to affect blood vessels that are vital to inner ear health. In addition, women tend to be more likely to develop hearing loss after menopause when estrogen levels have dropped dramatically. This has led many scientists to recommend that prolonged hormone replacement therapy may help lower the risk of hearing loss in post-menopausal women. However, one study indicates that the opposite is true and prolonged hormone therapy is actually linked to a higher hearing loss risk.
