How Ears Hear

Have you ever wondered how our ears process sound? It all begins in the outer ear, the part of the ear you can visibly see. Its conical shape channels sound into the ear canal where sound waves are amplified. The sound waves travel toward the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. In the middle ear the eardrum’s vibrations cause tiny bones to vibrate and further amplify the sound. The tiny “stapes” bone connects the middle ear to the inner ear, where sound waves enter the cochlea, a fluid-filled organ that moves in response to vibrations and turns them into electrical impulses that travel along the auditory nerve to the brain. The brain interprets these signals into the sounds we hear. 

  The human ear is an amazing instrument.
