The Stages of Hearing Loss

     Hearing loss is broken down into five stages that describe the severity of hearing loss: mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe, and profound. In the mild stage, a person may have difficulty understanding soft-spoken people and may have to ask people to speak up or repeat themselves. Moderate hearing loss can make speech hard to decipher. Many people find that wearing hearing aids at this stage can return hearing to normal. Moderately severe hearing loss usually means that a person cannot understand speech without the assistance of hearing aids. With severe hearing loss, speech and other sounds are inaudible without hearing aids or cochlear implants. A person with profound hearing loss may be unable to hear loud sounds like fire alarms. 

The first step toward better hearing is recognizing that a hearing problem exists. Having a hearing test is the second step.
